Key factors to know before choosing a floating dredging hose

In dredging projects, floating hoses are critical components connecting dredgers and directly impacting efficiency, safety, and costs. Improper selection may result in hose rupture, reduced flow or frequent replacements, resulting in project delays and increased risk. The following are key factors to consider before choosing a floating dredging hose.

1. Understand the characteristics of the conveying medium

The degree of wear on hoses varies significantly depending on the material:

Ordinary floating hoses can transport water, seawater, and mixtures of silt, clay, and sand;

When transporting materials in harsh working conditions such as coral reefs and weathered rocks, where the material particles are often angular and relatively hard, a hose with high wear resistance, such as the armored floating hose with built-in wear-resistant steel rings, should be selected.

2. Determine hose size: diameter and length

Hose size directly affects flow efficiency and system compatibility:

Inner diameter: Common range is 400mm–1200mm, which needs to match the pump and piping system to avoid flow loss or pressure abnormalities.

Length: The common range is 6m~11.8m. It needs to be reasonably selected according to the spatial layout and flexibility requirements of the work site. Too long or too short will affect the operational flexibility.

Although large diameter hoses can increase flow, flexibility and weight must also be considered.

3. Working pressure and burs pressure

The dredging hose must be able to withstand the maximum working pressure of the system and have sufficient safety margin:

Standard working pressure: 1.0-4.0MPa (depending on specific working conditions)

The burst pressure should be at least 3 times the working pressure to ensure safety

Pressure fluctuations must be taken into consideration to prevent hose damage from transient high pressure.

4. Flexibility and minimum bend radius

The floating hose needs to adapt to waves, tides and dredger movements, so flexibility is crucial:

Excessive small bend radius may cause the hose to kink or break.

A hose that is too soft may collapse under high pressure, affecting transporting efficiency.

5. Buoyancy

The floating jacket is made of closed-cell PE foam material and must have the following characteristics:

High buoyancy, stays afloat during operating.

Low water absorption to avoid sinking due to water absorption.

6. Material corrosion resistance and environmental adaptability

The marine environment places high demands on hose materials:

Flanges and reinforcements require corrosion resistance treatment

The hose material should be suitable for the temperature and chemical environment of the project location.

7. Certification and testing standards

CDSR dredging hoses comply with international standards ISO28017-2018 "Rubber hoses and hose assemblies, wire or textile reinforced, for dredging applications - Specification" and Chinese standard HG/T2490-2011 "Rubber hoses and fabric reinforced rubber hoses for dredging engineering and Hose Assembly Specifications" and are designed and manufactured under a quality system that complies with ISO 9001. All hoses produced by CDSR undergoes rigorous quality control to ensure high quality. Our products can also be customized to meet customer requirements.
